The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Please feel free to copy, download, or link to these lists. We ask only that you cite the source. See the archive for lists from previous months.

Summers on the Farm: A Corny Dozen
selected by Debra Mitts Smith

As spring planting season draws to a close and the cool, wet days of spring fade into the hot, humid days of summer, life on a farm begins to reach fever pitch. Summer times are busy times, and work, be it feeding chickens, slopping hogs, or pitching hay, cannot go untended. Fortunately, food is plentiful and there is lots to celebrate: last month's hatchlings are acquiring their feathers, and by the end of the month, cries of "corn's up!" will herald this year's yield. And sometimes, just the slightest breeze tinged with moisture or a distant rumbling is enough to put farmers and animals in to a frenzy. So come on down and visit some of the farms featured in this month's Dozens' list. ----Debra Mitts Smith
