So I'd seen some pretty heavy crap for a guy my age. But I clung desperately to my youthful idiocy as much as I could. You'd think that nearly dying like I had would change my attitude--make me shape up, as they say. But, as usual, life's lessons were wasted on me, and I learned absolutely nothing. My dad left. I thought for a few minutes about the implications of my dad's nervousness, and smallpox, and his rushing off to see his NATO contacts in Brussels, and then I thought, I've got to have a party.
