The Bulletin Dozen is a monthly theme-based booklist available as an online-only Bulletin feature. Since we're awfully fond of bakers here at the Bulletin, we thought we'd adopt their philosophy of generosity and throw in an extra one or two when we have them to offer--so don't expect an even dozen. Please feel free to copy, download, or link to these lists. We ask only that you cite the source. See the archive for lists from previous months.

Happy Birthday, Dear Abe!:  A Lincoln Dozen

--selected by Deborah Stevenson, Editor

Yes, it’s the two hundredth anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, and what with that fact and DC-bound Illinois senators being in the news generally right now, there’s a lot of Lincoln in the air.  This list comprises both edgy recent explorations of the man and those around him and time-honored biographies published nearly three-quarters of a century ago, which when put together offer a revealing picture of changing approaches in social attitudes and biography as well as of Lincoln himself.  Overall, he’s looking good:  ten score years seems to suit him.
