About the Bulletin

The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books is a book review journal for librarians, teachers, parents, and others interested in new children’s books. The Bulletin is a selective journal, reviewing approximately 900 of the over 5000 trade books published for children and young adults annually. Books reviewed include both recommended and not-recommended titles.

Bulletin Submissions

The Bulletin primarily reviews digital submissions, but physical submissions are still accepted. Please email all digital submissions to bccb@illinois.edu and include “Book Submission” at the beginning of the email’s subject line. We will confirm receipt of digital materials. We accept physical mailings at our normal office address:

The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
501 E. Daniel St.

Guidelines

If you are interested in submitting a book to The Bulletin for review consideration, please keep in mind the following:

Only trade and mass-market books are considered. We do not review textbooks, curricular materials, audiobooks, e-books, music, DVDs, toys, activity books, videos, software, apps, electronic publications, or magazines. Please note that at this time, we are not able to review content submitted on flash drives.

While we do not review “vanity press” books, we encourage submissions by small and alternative publishers. We do not review books that are only available by mail-order from the publisher, so please include distribution details with review copies.

We do not review or publish notice of reprints. Paperback originals are welcome and encouraged.

The Bulletin aims to review books within a few months of publication, beginning one month before the publication date. We prefer to review from bound galleys or f&g’s, which means we prefer to receive review copies at least three months prior to publication date. We do not review from flat galleys or manuscript. Only one copy of the galley, f&g, or bound book needs to be submitted, and a bound copy must follow upon publication. All materials submitted become property of The Bulletin and will not be returned.

Professional, scholarly, and adult trade books about children’s books, reading, and librarianship are listed and/or reviewed monthly in a section called “Professional Connections.” Submission requirements are the same as for children’s books.

Please include the following with review copies:

  • price and ISBN for each edition
  • estimated pagination
  • publication date
  • a contact person’s email address

It is most helpful if this material is printed on the galley or securely attached. For electronic submissions, please ensure the information is clearly noted in the body of the email or in an attached file. If a catalog is available, please send that as well.

After Submission

Please do not contact us to ask if and when a book is going to be reviewed, although a call or email to check that we have received a title is OK. If a book is reviewed, a copy of that review is sent to the publisher approximately three weeks before the review is published. We send reviews through the bccb@illinois.edu email and attach them in a Word Doc. PDFs and print copies are available upon request. If you would like print copies of the reviews mailed to you, please include your address.

Questions about submitting books for review should be directed to Kate Quealy-Gainer, Editor, by phone at (217) 244-0324, via e-mail at bccb@illinois.edu, or by mail to the above mailing address.

Thank you very much.
